OXYGEN COLLEGE
Studying at Oxygen College I made some great friends and connections, who I’ve gone on to collaborate with and create meaningful relationships with. I also made many occupational connections that opened pathways to begin working in the live industry while I was still studying.
One year on from studying I’m still working in the live industry alongside doing my music performance, and have continued to learn many valuable skills. I’ve been fortunate to work at large scale events and work with and engineer some esteemed acts. Continuing to work in the live industry shifted my focus from front of house engineering to monitor engineering and being a stage tech, as this better facilitates working with people.
This has also alleviated the need for as much income from performance endeavours, allowing for a less obligatory, and therefore more productive creative process; this has supported the recent release of a debut album.
I grew up in a small rural town with a strong interest in musical instrumentation. From a teen, the pursuit of music performance has been a strong focus. Composition became a way to express the way I related to the bush and community that I grew up in and the emotions associated with that.
A few years out of school and after moving down to Torquay, I started to develop the desire to study and learn again. A friend who studied at Oxygen College told me about their experience studying sound engineering and that there was an open day coming up. I was very interested and after going to the open day became excited about the prospect of studying with Oxygen College. As a musician, studying music performance didn’t interest me, however, studying sound engineering seemed like a great way to bolster a career in music performance and learn new skills. I enrolled into sound engineering as a developmental choice with no expectation to acquire work in the engineering field.
Studying sound engineering I gained a variety of new technical skills and knowledge that has supported my endeavour as a performer and composer. It has allowed me to better facilitate my creative journey and I can better relate to and collaborate with other engineers and musicians. It also brought to my awareness that I love working with people so learning the relevant skills and knowledge, I developed a passion for working in the live industry.
Being part of the Oxygen College group has been incredible. I still have meaningful ties to many trainers and fellow students. Everyone is there for a shared interest which leads to natural connections.
I am working in commercial radio. Part of my job is production, where I create advertisements, imaging and other on-air audio. Another part is announcing where I host the afternoon time slot and create voice commercials. Outside of work I rehearse, record and perform as the drummer in multiple projects formed from connections made at Oxygen College.
I’m very interested in many forms of art but sound is my natural outlet and passion. Exploring the possibilities of audio mediums and the human experience is what excites and motivates me.
I decided to study with Oxygen College because although I had a lot of passion, I didn’t have much direction or connection to the audio industry. It was also appealing to have structured learning environment as opposed to sifting through the internet for personal development.
My time at Oxygen College gave me fundamental knowledge in a wide variety of areas relating to sound. It’s given me confidence when entering new roles that I have a trustworthy knowledge base to build upon.
Absolutely. Supporting my fellow tech classmates and music students at gigs was the best way to network and engage in new experiences outside the college environment. The social element was important for me as I'm someone who likes to absorb many ideas and methods of working.
I'm working as a technician, using and improving on all the skills I learnt at the college. I'm currently at a performing arts theatre as an audio and lighting technician, operating a range of shows from music concerts to theatre plays. I'm also working in a studio, recording and mixing music projects with artists from the region.
Production is both my profession and my passion. I am always absorbing some form of art and I love the technical aspect involved in helping artists make it. What I enjoy about my job is that there are always new methods to learn and new technologies to integrate.
I decided to study with Oxygen College because it allowed me to get into an environment where I could learn the core skills and knowledge to secure a job in the creative industry. The opportunity to use high end equipment and learn about the studio, live production and post-production was an important factor.
The practical element alongside theory was the best way for me to equip myself with the fundamentals. It gave me confidence that I could perform as a technician in real event situations. The experience taught me many things, but most importantly it gave me a platform to work and improve on my skills.
